You can instantly see that a page is being viewed in secure mode as the URL (address) will start with "https://" instead of the usual "http://" . The extra "s" stands for secure, this can also be validated as secure pages have a small icon displayed in most browser windows.

In Microsoft Internet Explorer a small padlock is displayed at the bottom of the screen. In Netscape Navigator (Version 3 and earlier versions) a solid key is displayed in the left hand corner of the screen. When viewing standard (non secure) pages this symbol becomes a broken key.

In later versions of Netscape (Version 4 and higher) this key is replaced by a closed padlock when viewing a secure page.
